Peripheral Arterial Disease II: Clinical Manifestations and Diagnostic Evaluation

24
Clinical manifestationsPeripheral Arterial Disease (PAD) manifests through a range of symptoms, from the characteristic intermittent claudication to atypical presentations and severe complications in advanced stages. Intermittent claudication, a hallmark symptom of PAD, presents as exercise-induced muscle pain that typically resolves within minutes of rest. This pain is reproducible and stems from inadequate blood flow, leading to the accumulation of lactic acid produced during anaerobic...

Atherosclerosis IV: Nursing Management

35
Nursing management for a patient with arteriosclerosis involves a comprehensive approach focusing on lifestyle modification, disease monitoring, education, and symptomatic care. Here is an overview of effective nursing strategies:Assessment and Monitoring: Initial and ongoing assessments are crucial. Nurses must document the patient's medical history, including any hypertension, diabetes, hyperlipidemia, and other cardiovascular diseases. Assessments also cover family history and lifestyle...

Summary

Persistent headache attributed to past stroke (PHAPS) is less common than previously thought. This study found a low prevalence of PHAPS in stroke patients, suggesting prior estimates may be overestimated.

Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Headache Medicine
  • Stroke Research

Background:

  • Persistent headache attributed to past stroke (PHAPS) is a recently classified headache disorder.
  • Its prevalence and characteristics remain poorly understood, with limited evidence from retrospective studies.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To prospectively investigate the frequency and clinical features of PHAPS in patients experiencing acute stroke.
  • To assess the long-term headache status of stroke survivors.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective enrollment of patients with acute stroke and associated headache (HAAS) from a single-center registry.
  • Analysis of demographic, clinical, and neuroimaging data.
  • Follow-up assessment via phone questionnaire at 6 to 12 months post-stroke.

Main Results:

  • Out of 121 acute stroke patients, 29 (24.0%) had HAAS; 23 (20.0%) completed follow-up.
  • Only 10 patients (8.3%) reported persistent headache at follow-up.
  • Most patients with persistent headache had a history of chronic headaches, but described them as different from their post-stroke headache.

Conclusions:

  • The actual prevalence of PHAPS may be lower than previously reported in the literature.
  • The findings question the current understanding of PHAPS, highlighting the need for further research.
  • Distinguishing PHAPS from pre-existing chronic headache conditions is crucial.
