This study found that rapid eye movement (REM) sleep-dependent obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is common in mild to moderate cases and predominantly affects females. However, REM-OSA does not appear to hold significant clinical importance as a distinct OSA subtype.
Area of Science:
- Sleep Medicine
- Respiratory Medicine
- Clinical Research
Background:
- The clinical significance of REM-dependent OSA is debated due to varied diagnostic criteria.
- This study aimed to clarify the role of REM-OSA in a Korean population with adequate sleep data.
Purpose of the Study:
- To determine the clinical significance of REM-OSA in Koreans.
- To compare clinical and polysomnography (PSG) data between REM-OSA and non-REM-OSA patients.
Main Methods:
- Investigated 1824 OSA patients diagnosed via PSG.
- Defined REM-OSA using specific apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) criteria for REM and NREM sleep.
- Collected demographic and medical data from records and questionnaires.
Main Results:
- 140 patients (20.2%) were classified as REM-OSA.
- REM-OSA was more prevalent in females (53.6%) and in mild to moderate OSA severity.
- No significant clinical differences were found between REM-OSA and nREM-OSA groups.
Conclusions:
- REM-OSA is frequent in mild-to-moderate OSA and females, aligning with Western population findings.
- The study suggests REM-OSA lacks distinct clinical significance as a subtype of OSA.
- Standardized criteria are crucial for evaluating REM-dependent OSA.
