This study shows that Rhodiola semenovii root extract, containing salidroside, effectively corrects hypothyroidism. It significantly lowers thyroid-stimulating hormone and boosts thyroid hormones, with enhanced effects when combined with potassium iodide.
Area of Science:
- Clinical endocrinology
- Herbal medicine
- Pharmacology
Background:
- Thyroid pathology is prevalent, necessitating effective treatments for hypothyroidism.
- Developing safe and potent herbal remedies for thyroid dysfunction is a key research area.
- Salidroside, a compound from Rhodiola species, exhibits beneficial biological activities.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the antihypothyroid efficacy of an extract from Rhodiola semenovii roots.
- To investigate the potential of salidroside-containing R. semenovii extract in managing hypothyroidism.
Main Methods:
- An experimental model of mercazolyl-induced hypothyroidism was employed.
- The effects of R. semenovii extract on thyroid-stimulating hormone and thyroid hormone levels were assessed.
- The combined therapeutic effect of the extract with potassium iodide was examined.
Main Results:
- The R. semenovii extract demonstrated a significant reduction in thyroid-stimulating hormone levels (p ≤ 0.001).
- The extract led to a notable increase in thyroid hormone levels.
- Co-administration with potassium iodide amplified the extract's therapeutic benefits by 1.3-fold.
Conclusions:
- Salidroside-rich R. semenovii root extract is a safe and effective agent for hypothyroidism correction.
- The extract shows promise as a natural therapeutic option for thyroid hypofunction.
- Combined therapy with potassium iodide offers enhanced efficacy for hypothyroidism treatment.
