Summary

Shear-wave elastography (SWE) parameters correlate with invasive breast cancer pathology. Androgen receptor (AR) positive tumors show lower elastic modulus standard deviation (Esd) than AR negative tumors, offering potential diagnostic insights.

Area of Science:

  • Radiology
  • Oncology
  • Biophysics

Background:

  • Invasive breast cancer (IBC) diagnosis relies on histopathology.
  • Accurate non-invasive assessment of IBC pathological features is crucial for treatment planning.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between shear-wave elastography (SWE) parameters and the pathological characteristics of invasive breast cancer.
  • To determine if SWE can provide non-invasive insights into tumor aggressiveness and biological markers.

Main Methods:

  • A cohort of 197 patients with IBC underwent preoperative SWE.
  • Key SWE parameters including maximum elastic modulus (Emax), mean elastic modulus (Emean), and elastic modulus standard deviation (Esd) were measured.
  • Statistical analyses (univariate and multivariate) were performed to correlate SWE metrics with postoperative pathological findings.

Main Results:

  • Significant correlations were observed between SWE parameters and tumor size, histological grade, lymphovascular invasion, and Ki-67 status.
  • Invasive lobular carcinoma (ILC) exhibited higher Emean than invasive ductal carcinoma (IDC).
  • Androgen receptor (AR) positive tumors demonstrated significantly lower Esd compared to AR negative tumors.

Conclusions:

  • SWE parameters are associated with various pathological profiles of invasive breast cancer.
  • SWE shows potential as a non-invasive tool to assess tumor characteristics, including AR status.
