Why do patients with essential hypertension experience sleep apnea syndrome?

Augmented drive from the arterial chemoreceptors has been found in essential hypertension. We hypothesize that overactivity of the chemoreflex is responsible for frequent episodes of sleep apnea in hypertensive patients.
