Summary

A rare deep neck infection, masticatory space abscess, occurred after intramuscular stimulation of the temporomandibular joint. This case highlights the need for standardized training in needling therapies to prevent adverse events.

Background:

  • Intramuscular stimulation (IMS) and acupuncture are popular complementary therapies.
  • While generally safe, these needling therapies carry risks, including deep neck space infections.

Observation:

  • A male patient developed a masticatory space abscess following IMS of the temporomandibular joint region.
  • Symptoms included preauricular tenderness, trismus, and dysphagia, with imaging confirming the abscess.

Findings:

  • The patient underwent successful incision and drainage, followed by oral antibiotics.
  • This is the first reported case of masticatory space abscess after IMS of the temporomandibular joint area.

Implications:

  • This case underscores the potential for serious adverse events from needling therapies.
  • Standardizing training and practice guidelines for IMS and acupuncture may reduce the incidence of such complications.
