Area of Science:

  • Pharmacology
  • Hepatology
  • Toxicology

Background:

  • Marijuana is a prevalent recreational substance in the United States.
  • Understanding its health impacts, particularly on the liver, is crucial.

Observation:

  • Common marijuana side effects include altered mood, memory, motor skills, and hallucinations.
  • Chronic marijuana use has been anecdotally linked to liver abnormalities such as transaminitis and hepatomegaly.

Findings:

  • Hepatitis directly resulting from heavy marijuana smoking is an exceedingly uncommon occurrence.
  • The association between chronic marijuana use and liver enzyme elevation warrants further investigation.

Implications:

  • This highlights the need for continued research into the long-term effects of marijuana on liver function.
  • Clinicians should consider marijuana use when evaluating patients with unexplained liver abnormalities, albeit recognizing the rarity of direct causation.
