Summary

5-alpha-reductase inhibitors (5-ARI) and COVID-19 vaccination significantly reduce the risk of contracting and developing severe COVID-19 in men with prostatic hyperplasia. Both factors offer substantial protection against infection and hospitalization.

Area of Science:

  • Urology
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Pharmacology

Context:

  • Prostatic hyperplasia is common in aging males.
  • COVID-19 poses risks, especially to older populations.
  • 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors (5-ARI) are used to treat prostatic hyperplasia.

Purpose:

  • To assess the impact of 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors (5-ARI) on COVID-19 incidence and hospitalization rates.
  • To evaluate the combined protective effects of 5-ARI and COVID-19 vaccination.

Summary:

  • A study of 1490 male patients with prostatic hyperplasia found that 5-ARI intake reduced COVID-19 risk by 76.5%.
  • Both 5-ARI and vaccination were independently associated with lower COVID-19 incidence and severity.
  • Factors increasing severe COVID-19 risk included older age and coronary artery disease.

Impact:

  • 5-ARI treatment, alongside vaccination, acts as a protective factor against COVID-19 morbidity and severity in patients with prostatic hyperplasia.
  • Findings suggest potential therapeutic benefits of 5-ARI in managing COVID-19 risk in this demographic.
  • Highlights the importance of vaccination and existing pharmacotherapies in mitigating infectious disease outcomes.
