Spontaneous pneumothorax in COVID-19: a single center experience

COVID-19 patients in intensive care who developed pneumothorax had higher intubation and mortality rates. Early recognition and prevention of pneumothorax are crucial for critically ill COVID-19 patients.

- COVID-19 patients developing pneumothorax during ICU care experienced longer hospital stays and increased intubation rates.
- Higher pneumothorax rates were noted with noninvasive/high-frequency oscillatory ventilation (HFOV) with positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP).
- Findings may aid in early prevention and recognition of pneumothorax in critically ill COVID-19 patients to reduce mortality.
