Pulmonary Tuberculosis IV01:26

Pulmonary Tuberculosis IV

186
Tuberculosis, more commonly referred to as TB, is an infectious disease stemming from Mycobacterium tuberculosis. While it primarily impacts the lungs, TB can also affect other body areas. Given its severity and global impact, timely and accurate diagnosis is crucial for controlling its spread and improving patient outcomes.
Several diagnostic approaches are used to detect TB. The conventional method is the Tuberculin Skin Test (TST), also known as the Mantoux test. However, this method has...

Summary

The diafactory hs-TP (DTS) test showed good accuracy in diagnosing tinea gladiatorum in wrestlers, offering rapid, onsite results comparable to direct microscopy. Further research is recommended.

Area of Science:

  • Dermatology
  • Mycology
  • Infectious Diseases

Background:

  • Tinea gladiatorum is a fungal infection common among wrestlers.
  • Accurate and rapid diagnosis is crucial for effective management and prevention of spread.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the diagnostic performance of the diafactory hs-TP (DTS) test for tinea gladiatorum.
  • To compare DTS results with direct potassium hydroxide (KOH) microscopy.

Main Methods:

  • A prospective, comparative study was conducted with 71 high school wrestlers.
  • Skin samples were collected from suspicious rashes for both DTS and direct KOH microscopy analysis.

Main Results:

  • Direct KOH microscopy confirmed tinea gladiatorum in 46% of samples.
  • DTS demonstrated 80% sensitivity, 82% specificity, 85% PPV, and 86% NPV.
  • The concordance between DTS and KOH microscopy was 83%.

Conclusions:

  • DTS provides rapid, onsite results for tinea gladiatorum diagnosis with performance comparable to direct KOH microscopy.
  • While not FDA-approved, DTS shows potential for clinical use, similar to its performance in other tinea infections.
  • Further studies using PCR as a reference standard are warranted to validate DTS accuracy.
