Video cases for Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCEs) preparation were widely used by pharmacy students. These resources were found to be usable, useful, and acceptable, offering a feasible alternative to mock OSCEs.
Area of Science:
- Medical Education
- Pharmacy Education
- Assessment Methods
Background:
- Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCEs) are crucial for licensure but pose challenges for students and faculty.
- Developing effective preparation resources for high-stakes OSCEs is essential for pharmacy programs.
- Existing OSCE preparation methods can be resource-intensive and stressful for students.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate student engagement with case-based video OSCE preparation resources.
- To compare student scoring of performances against faculty assessments.
- To assess the usability, usefulness, and acceptability of video cases for OSCE preparation.
Main Methods:
- Final year pharmacy students (n=149) participated in the study.
- Six sets of video OSCE cases, recorded at varying performance levels, were developed.
- Students watched and scored videos, with usability, usefulness, and acceptability assessed via questionnaire.
Main Results:
- 70.5% of students accessed one or more video cases.
- Student scores showed a trend towards agreement with faculty ratings.
- Students reported positive perceptions of the videos' usability, usefulness, and acceptability.
Conclusions:
- Video cases are a widely adopted and positively received resource for pharmacy licensure OSCE preparation.
- These video resources demonstrate feasibility as an alternative to traditional mock OSCEs.
- Case-based video OSCE preparation can effectively support student readiness for high-stakes examinations.
