Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the association between underage e-cigarette purchasing behavior and subsequent vaping frequency, intensity, and dependence symptoms.
  • To examine if associations differ by purchase location or product type.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective cohort study of 1,029 young adults aged 18-20 in Los Angeles who had ever used e-cigarettes at baseline.
  • Assessed underage purchasing behavior (purchased vs. owned but never purchased vs. never owned) and vaping outcomes one year later.
  • Adjusted for baseline vaping behaviors; analyzed differences by purchase location and product type.

Main Results:

  • 32% of participants purchased e-cigarettes underage. Compared to never owning, purchasing e-cigarettes underage was associated with significantly higher vaping frequency, intensity, and odds of dependence.
  • Elevated vaping frequency and dependence were also observed for those who owned but never purchased e-cigarettes.
  • Vaping dependence was highest among participants who purchased JUULs or other pod-mod devices.

Conclusions:

  • Underage e-cigarette purchasing is a significant risk factor for increased vaping intensity and dependence.
  • Regulations reducing underage retail access to e-cigarettes are crucial for preventing vaping progression and dependence in at-risk youth.
