- To address the complexities of treating elderly COVID-19 patients.
- To identify issues related to inappropriate medication prescribing in this demographic.
- To propose an updated assessment tool tailored for elderly COVID-19 patients and their treatments.
Main Methods:
- Literature review on COVID-19 management in the elderly.
- Analysis of medication prescribing patterns in older adults.
- Development of a conceptual framework for an updated assessment tool.
Main Results:
- Significant evidence of inappropriate medication prescribing in elderly COVID-19 patients.
- Existing assessment tools may not adequately address COVID-19 specific needs.
- A need for a revised, comprehensive assessment tool is identified.
Conclusions:
- Optimizing medication management is crucial for elderly COVID-19 patients.
- An updated assessment tool is necessary to ensure safe and effective care.
- Further research should validate the proposed assessment tool for clinical practice.
Abstract:
Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) complicates clinical management in elderly population. There is an additional need to properly treat and monitor elderly COVID-19 patients. This paper discusses the inappropriate medication prescribing in the elderly and suggests an updated valid assessment tool considering COVID-19 and its treatment.
