Light Acquisition

8.6K
In order to produce glucose, plants need to capture sufficient light energy. Many modern plants have evolved leaves specialized for light acquisition. Leaves can be only millimeters in width or tens of meters wide, depending on the environment. Due to competition for sunlight, evolution has driven the evolution of increasingly larger leaves and taller plants, to avoid shading by their neighbors with contaminant elaboration of root architecture and mechanisms to transport water and nutrients.

Area of Science:

  • Agricultural Robotics
  • Computer Vision
  • Precision Agriculture

Background:

  • Weed control in corn fields is crucial for crop yield.
  • Traditional weeding methods can be labor-intensive and may damage crops.
  • Non-contact weeding tools offer a potential solution for sustainable agriculture.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To design and evaluate a YOLOX convolutional neural network-based weeding robot.
  • To assess the efficacy of a blue light laser as a non-contact weed removal tool.
  • To verify the robot's precision in identifying and targeting weeds in corn fields.

Main Methods:

  • Development of a robot with a tracked mobile platform, weed identification module, and a five-degree-of-freedom robotic arm with a laser emitter.
  • Utilizing YOLOX convolutional neural network for differentiating corn seedlings from weeds based on texture and shape.
  • Employing monocular ranging and triangle similarity for precise weed coordinate calculation and laser targeting.

Main Results:

  • The robot achieved an average detection rate of 92.45% for corn seedlings and 88.94% for weeds.
  • The average weed dry weight prevention efficacy was 85%, with a seedling injury rate of 4.68%.
  • The robotic arm demonstrated precise alignment capabilities for laser-based weed removal.

Conclusions:

  • The developed YOLOX-based weeding robot accurately detects weeds in corn fields.
  • The robotic arm and blue light laser system are effective for precise, non-contact weed removal.
  • This technology shows promise for improving efficiency and sustainability in corn farming.
