Area of Science:

  • Forensic Psychiatry
  • Telepsychiatry
  • Psychological Assessment

Background:

  • Videoconferencing for forensic evaluations has significantly increased in the past decade.
  • This commentary addresses key points raised by Recupero concerning remote forensic psychiatric evaluations.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To examine the research supporting telepsychiatry and its applicability to forensic assessment.
  • To discuss the error rates and field acceptance of remote forensic assessments.
  • To outline criteria for incorporating psychological testing and specialized forensic measures in remote assessments.

Main Methods:

  • Literature review of telepsychiatry research.
  • Analysis of factors influencing the generalizability of telepsychiatry to forensic contexts.
  • Examination of criteria for selecting appropriate psychological and forensic measures for remote administration.

Main Results:

  • Research supports telepsychiatry, but its generalizability to forensic settings requires careful consideration.
  • Error rates and acceptance vary, necessitating clear guidelines for remote forensic assessments.
  • Specific criteria can guide the selection of tests suitable for remote forensic evaluations.

Conclusions:

  • Remote forensic evaluations via videoconferencing are feasible but require adherence to specific guidelines.
  • Further research is needed to fully establish the validity and reliability of remote forensic assessments.
  • Standardized criteria are essential for the responsible integration of technology in forensic evaluations.
