Lifelong premature ejaculation is common in males and linked to attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Patients with lifelong premature ejaculation showed higher ADHD symptoms, particularly hyperactivity and impulsivity.
Area of Science:
- Urology
- Psychiatry
- Sexual Health
Background:
- Lifelong premature ejaculation (PE) is a prevalent male sexual dysfunction.
- Sexual dysfunctions, including PE, are frequently observed in adults with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).
- The co-occurrence and specific symptomology of ADHD in individuals with lifelong PE warrant investigation.
Purpose of the Study:
- To determine the prevalence of ADHD in patients diagnosed with lifelong PE.
- To compare ADHD symptoms between patients with lifelong PE and a control group.
- To identify specific ADHD symptom subtypes associated with lifelong PE.
Main Methods:
- A case-control study involving 48 patients with lifelong PE and 40 healthy controls.
- Utilized Wender-Utah Rating Scale-25 and Adult ADHD Self-Report Scale for ADHD assessment.
- Employed Arabic Index of Premature Ejaculation and Premature Ejaculation Diagnostic Tool for PE evaluation.
Main Results:
- ADHD was diagnosed in 41.66% of lifelong PE patients versus 5% of controls.
- Patients with lifelong PE exhibited significantly higher mean scores on ADHD rating scales (WURS-25, ASRS) and its hyperactivity-impulsivity subscale.
- No significant difference was observed in the inattention subtype scores between groups.
Conclusions:
- Adults with lifelong PE have a higher prevalence of ADHD, particularly the hyperactive-impulsive subtype.
- Routine screening for ADHD, especially hyperactivity and impulsivity, is recommended for individuals with lifelong PE.
- Further large-scale studies are needed to elucidate the complex relationship between lifelong PE and ADHD.
