Summary
Antiphospholipid antibodies (aPL) are more common in autoimmune thyroid diseases (AITD). Anti-β2 glycoprotein I antibodies (aβ2GPI), particularly IgA isotype, were frequent in Hashimoto
Area of Science:
- Immunology
- Endocrinology
- Rheumatology
Background:
- Antiphospholipid (aPL) antibodies are associated with various autoimmune conditions.
- The presence and frequency of specific aPL, including anti-cardiolipin (aCL) and anti-β2 glycoprotein I (aβ2GPI) antibodies, in autoimmune thyroid diseases (AITD) require further investigation.
Purpose of the Study:
- To determine the prevalence of aPL, specifically aCL and aβ2GPI antibodies, in patients diagnosed with AITD.
- To compare the frequency of aPL between different types of AITD (Hashimoto's thyroiditis and Graves' disease) and healthy individuals.
Main Methods:
- Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was employed to detect IgG, IgA, and IgM isotypes of aCL and aβ2GPI antibodies.
- A cohort of 195 AITD patients (139 with Hashimoto's thyroiditis, 56 with Graves' disease) and 90 healthy blood donors were analyzed.
Main Results:
- A significantly higher frequency of aPL was observed in AITD patients (33.3%) and Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT) patients (38.1%) compared to healthy blood donors (HBD) (11.1%).
- The frequency of aPL was lower in Graves' disease (GD) patients (21.4%) compared to HT patients (p=0.025).
- In HT patients, anti-β2 glycoprotein I antibodies (aβ2GPI) were significantly more prevalent (34.5%) than anti-cardiolipin antibodies (aCL) (13.6%). The IgA isotype of aβ2GPI was particularly elevated in HT patients compared to HBD and GD patients.
Conclusions:
- Anti-β2 glycoprotein I antibodies (aβ2GPI), rather than aCL, are frequently detected in patients with autoimmune thyroid diseases (AITD).
- The IgA isotype is the predominant form of aβ2GPI found in AITD.
- The prevalence of aβ2GPI-IgA is higher in Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT) compared to Graves' disease (GD).

Synthesis and Regulation of Thyroid Hormones
4.9K
Low blood levels of the thyroid hormones — triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4) — signal the hypothalamus to release the thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH). TRH then reaches the pituitary gland and stimulates the release of thyroid-stimulating hormone(TSH) into the bloodstream.
Upon reaching the thyroid gland, TSH stimulates the follicular cells' active uptake of iodide ions from the blood. The ions diffuse to the apical surface of the cells and are oxidized to iodine. The...

Autoimmune Disorders
613
Autoimmune diseases are a group of disorders in which the body's immune system mistakenly attacks its own cells, tissues, and organs. This results from an overactive immune response against substances and tissues normally present in the body. Let's delve into the concept and mechanism of autoimmune diseases from an immune system point of view, explore different causes and examples of such diseases, and discuss potential solutions.

Gastritis-II: Pathophysiology
452
Gastritis is marked by disruption of the mucosal barrier that usually protects the stomach tissue from digestive juices and manifests in acute and chronic forms.
In acute gastritis, the gastric mucosa becomes swollen and red and undergoes superficial erosion. Superficial ulceration may lead to bleeding.
In chronic gastritis, persistent or repeated insults lead to chronic inflammatory changes and, eventually, thinning or atrophy of the gastric tissue.
Gastritis can stem from various causes, each...

Myasthenia Gravis: Overview and Treatment
1.8K
Myasthenia gravis is a neuromuscular transmission disorder characterized by weakness and increased fatigability of skeletal muscles. It is an autoimmune disease affecting approximately one in 2000 people, where antibodies against the α1 subunit of nicotinic acetylcholine receptors are produced.
These antibodies interfere with the function of the nicotinic receptors in three ways: by binding to the receptor and disrupting acetylcholine binding; by causing cross-linking of receptors which...

Functions of Thyroid Hormones
3.0K
The thyroid hormone (TH) plays a pivotal role in the intricate orchestration of physiological processes, exerting profound effects on development, metabolism, and homeostasis throughout different life stages.
TH is indispensable for the normal development and maturation of the skeletal, muscular, and nervous systems during fetal and childhood growth. It facilitates bone mineral turnover and regulates protein synthesis in developing tissues, contributing significantly to overall growth and...
