Computed Tomography

4.8K
Tomography refers to imaging by sections. Computed tomography (CT) is a non-invasive imaging technique that uses computers to analyze several cross-sectional X-rays to reveal minute details about structures in the body.
The technique was invented in the 1970s and is based on the principle that as X-rays pass through the body, they are absorbed or reflected at different levels. In the technique, a patient lies on a motorized platform while a computerized axial tomography (CAT) scanner rotates...

DefinitionComputed Tomography (CT) of the genitourinary (GU) tract is a non-invasive imaging modality that utilizes X-rays and computer processing to generate detailed cross-sectional images of the urinary system, encompassing the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and adjacent structures such as the adrenal glands.PurposeCT scans of the GU tract serve several diagnostic and therapeutic purposes, including:Diagnosis of Urinary Tract Diseases: Detects kidney stones, tumors, cysts, and congenital...

Area of Science:

  • Otolaryngology
  • Radiology
  • Anatomy

Background:

  • Assessing ossicular structures in the temporal bone is crucial.
  • High-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) offers a non-invasive method for such assessments.
  • Understanding the accuracy of HRCT in measuring distances between temporal bone elements is of significant interest.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To measure distances between the malleal neck and the stapedial head and footplate using HRCT.
  • To compare HRCT measurements with actual distances obtained through surgical dissection of cadaveric temporal bones.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized 20 cadaveric temporal bones (10 male, 10 female).
  • Performed HRCT to measure distances between specific ossicular structures.
  • Conducted surgical dissection to obtain direct measurements for comparison.
  • Analyzed data using statistical methods, including intraclass correlation coefficients.

Main Results:

  • HRCT measurements for malleal neck to stapedial head (3.35 mm) and footplate (5.29 mm) were highly comparable to surgical measurements (3.40 mm and 5.30 mm, respectively).
  • Intraclass correlation coefficients were high (0.901 for head, 0.923 for footplate), indicating strong agreement.
  • No statistically significant differences were found between HRCT and actual measurements.

Conclusions:

  • HRCT provides statistically comparable, reliable, and accurate measurements of ossicular structures in cadaveric temporal bones.
  • HRCT is a valuable tool for assessing the spatial relationships of ossicles, with results mirroring direct surgical measurements.
