A brief online compassion-focused intervention improved well-being for Intensive Care Unit (ICU) nurses. This intervention may enhance self-compassion and reduce burnout and trauma in healthcare staff.
Area of Science:
- Psychological interventions
- Healthcare worker well-being
- Compassion-focused therapy
Background:
- Healthcare staff, especially nurses, experience high stress, exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic.
- Self-compassion is a psychological construct that can promote well-being in healthcare professionals.
- A service development project implemented a brief online compassion-focused intervention for Intensive Care Unit (ICU) nurses.
Purpose of the Study:
- To assess the feasibility of an online compassion-focused intervention for ICU nurses.
- To evaluate the potential benefits of the intervention on psychological well-being.
- To explore the impact on compassion, burnout, trauma, and emotional climate.
Main Methods:
- An online, 4-week compassion-focused intervention was delivered to ICU nurses.
- Participants were divided into two groups: those who completed the intervention and those who did not.
- Measures of compassion, burnout, trauma, and emotional climate were analyzed at baseline and post-intervention.
Main Results:
- Nurses completing the intervention showed increased compassion and soothing emotional climate.
- Significant reductions in burnout, trauma, and threat in the emotional climate were observed post-intervention.
- Nurses who did not complete the intervention had lower baseline compassion and soothing, and higher trauma and threat.
Conclusions:
- Brief online compassion-focused interventions can promote well-being in ICU nurses.
- The intervention may be most effective for nurses with a pre-existing level of self-compassion.
- Online interventions offer a valuable addition to traditional psychological support for nursing staff.
