Pulmonary chondromas, part of Carney's triad, can grow rapidly and asymptomatically. Complete surgical resection effectively controls these lung tumors, with no recurrence observed in this case.
Area of Science:
- Thoracic oncology
- Pulmonary medicine
- Surgical pathology
Background:
- Pulmonary chondroma is a rare lung tumor, often associated with Carney's triad.
- Typically, these tumors exhibit slow growth and are unilateral.
- This case highlights a rare instance of rapid tumor proliferation.
Observation:
- A young female presented with a small pulmonary nodule detected via CT scan.
- Over 18 months, the nodule significantly increased in size, and a new nodule appeared.
- The patient underwent successful robot-assisted lower lobectomy for the chondrogenic tumor.
Findings:
- The resected tumor was diagnosed as a chondrogenic tumor, a type of pulmonary chondroma.
- Despite previous reports of slow growth, this tumor demonstrated rapid asymptomatic growth and proliferation.
- Post-operative follow-up showed no recurrence of the tumor.
Implications:
- Pulmonary chondromas can exhibit rapid, asymptomatic growth, challenging previous understandings.
- Complete surgical resection appears to be an effective treatment modality.
- Long-term surveillance is crucial for early detection of other Carney's triad components.
