    Summary

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infections were identified in a nursing home, with evidence suggesting acquisition within the facility. Control measures reduced but did not eliminate new cases of this concerning bacterial pathogen.

    Area of Science:

    • Infectious Diseases
    • Epidemiology
    • Geriatric Medicine

    Background:

    • Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) poses a significant threat in healthcare settings.
    • Nursing homes may act as reservoirs for MRSA transmission within communities.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate an outbreak of MRSA in a nursing home.
    • To identify the source and extent of MRSA colonization and infection.
    • To evaluate the effectiveness of control measures.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective review of cases over 13 months.
    • Culture surveys of residents and personnel.
    • Implementation and assessment of infection control protocols.

    Main Results:

    Related Experiment Videos

    • 25 residents had positive MRSA cultures, with 17 experiencing infections.
    • MRSA was detected in 12% of surveyed residents and 7% of personnel.
    • Evidence suggested MRSA acquisition within the nursing home environment.
    • Control measures decreased but did not eradicate new MRSA cases.

    Conclusions:

    • Nursing homes can be sites for MRSA acquisition and transmission.
    • Ongoing surveillance and robust control measures are crucial.
    • Further research is needed to optimize MRSA management in long-term care facilities.
