Summary

Dacryocystectomy (DCT) significantly reduces epiphora in patients with primary acquired nasolacrimal duct obstruction. Postoperative watering improvement was substantial, offering relief from ocular discharge.

Background:

  • Primary acquired nasolacrimal duct obstruction is a common condition causing epiphora.
  • Epiphora significantly impacts patient quality of life.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the effectiveness of dacryocystectomy (DCT) in alleviating epiphora.
  • To assess the impact of DCT on subjective watering and objective clinical scores.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective, nonrandomized, interventional study over 12 months.
  • Included patients aged over 70 with primary acquired nasolacrimal duct obstruction.
  • Assessed subjective watering improvement, Munk score, and fluorescein dye disappearance test (FDDT) pre- and postoperatively.

Main Results:

  • Eighty-two eyes from 65 patients were analyzed, with a majority being female.
  • Mean subjective watering improvement was 86.8%.
  • Significant improvements were observed in Munk and FDDT scores (P = 0.00001).

Conclusions:

  • Dacryocystectomy is an effective surgical option for primary acquired nasolacrimal duct obstruction.
  • DCT provides significant reduction in epiphora and improves ocular discharge.
  • Patients can be counseled on the high likelihood of reduced watering after surgery.
