Disorders of the Male Reproductive System01:20

Disorders of the Male Reproductive System

522
Men's health issues are increasingly recognized as significant, with several conditions posing common threats. Among these, testicular cancer is especially prevalent in younger men, particularly those aged 20 to 35 years. The disease often manifests as a painless mass in the testicles, sometimes accompanied by a sensation of heaviness or a dull ache.
Prostate disorders are another major concern. These conditions can impair urinary flow due to the prostate's location around the urethra....

Nursing Assessment of the Genitourinary System I: Health History

64
The genitourinary system is critical to maintaining fluid balance, waste elimination, and reproductive function. Nurses play a vital role in assessing this system, beginning with a thorough health history. This process involves gathering patient information, identifying risk factors, and recognizing symptoms of genitourinary disorders. Early detection is vital for timely interventions and management.1. Gathering Patient InformationA complete health history includes the patient’s personal,...

Urodynamic Studies: Uroflowmetry

288
Uroflowmetry is a non-invasive urodynamic test designed to measure various aspects of urination, including volume, flow rate, and the time to void. This test is crucial for diagnosing and assessing conditions such as bladder outlet obstruction, bladder dysfunction, incomplete bladder emptying, incontinence, and urinary tract blockages caused by benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and urethral strictures.Pre-Test Instructions:Before a uroflowmetry test, patients are typically advised to drink...

Wilcoxon Rank-Sum Test

292
The Wilcoxon rank-sum test, also known as the Mann-Whitney U test, is a nonparametric test used to determine if there is a significant difference between the distributions of two independent samples. This test is designed specifically for two independent populations and has the following key requirements:

Urologic Endoscopic Procedure: Cystoscopic Examination

229
Meaning of Cystoscopic Examination:Cystoscopy is an essential diagnostic tool in urology that is used to assess the structure and function of the genitourinary system. It provides a direct view of the urethra, bladder, and, in some cases, the ureteral openings. This procedure helps detect structural abnormalities, infections, cancers, and blockages in the urinary tract. There are two types of cystoscopy:Flexible cystoscopy is commonly performed in outpatient settings due to its less invasive...

Anatomy of the Genitourinary System II: Bladder and Urethra

174
The lower urinary system consists of the urinary bladder and urethra, which are essential in storing and expelling urine from the body. Together with the internal and external sphincters, these structures work together to regulate urination effectively.Anatomy of the BladderThe urinary bladder is a muscular, stretchable organ behind the pubic bone and in front of the rectum. In females, the bladder is positioned anterior to the vagina and inferior to the uterus, while in males, it is located...

Summary

Men urologists are more likely to be featured on "Top Doctor" lists than women urologists. However, women urologists are more likely to complete specialized fellowship training, particularly in female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery.

Area of Science:

  • Urology
  • Medical Professionalism
  • Gender Studies

Background:

  • The increasing number of women in urology necessitates an examination of their representation in professional accolades.
  • Top Doctor lists are often perceived as indicators of professional standing and expertise.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate if "Top Doctor" lists accurately reflect the current gender distribution of urologists.
  • To identify regional variations in the gender composition of these lists.
  • To compare the professional profiles of male and female urologists featured on "Top Doctor" lists.

Main Methods:

  • Analysis of urologists from regional "Top Doctor" lists (Castle Connolly) published between January 2020 and June 2021.
  • Comparison of list demographics with American Urological Association (AUA) census data.
  • Statistical analysis using log odds ratios to assess gender-based inclusion likelihood and fellowship completion rates.

Main Results:

  • Women constituted 8.50% of the 494 analyzed urologists across 25 lists, with 7 lists (28.0%) having no women urologists.
  • Men had a statistically significant higher likelihood of inclusion on "Top Doctor" lists (OR=1.31).
  • Women urologists were more likely to have completed a fellowship, especially in Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery (FPMRS) (P <.001).

Conclusions:

  • "Top Doctor" lists do not currently mirror the gender distribution within the urology field, showing a bias towards men.
  • Despite underrepresentation, women urologists achieving "Top Doctor" status demonstrate higher rates of specialized fellowship training, particularly in FPMRS.
