The Auditory Ossicles01:11

The Auditory Ossicles

1.9K
The auditory ossicles of the middle ear transmit sounds from the air as vibrations to the fluid-filled cochlea. The auditory ossicles consist of two malleus (hammer) bones, two incus (anvil) bones, and two stapes (stirrups), one on each side. These bones develop during the fetal stage and are the ones to ossify first. They are fully mature at birth and do not grow afterward.
The aptly named stapes look very much like a stirrup. The three ossicles are unique to mammals, and each plays a role in...

Anatomy of the Ear01:16

Anatomy of the Ear

8.7K
Auditory sensation, commonly called hearing, involves the transformation of sonic waves into neural impulses facilitated by the structures of the auditory organ. The prominent, flesh-like structure on the side of the head, called the auricle, directs sound waves towards the auditory canal. The auricle is often mislabeled as the pinna, a term more aligned with mobile structures like a feline's external ear. The auditory canal penetrates the cranium via the external auditory meatus of the...

Area of Science:

  • Pediatric Plastic Surgery
  • Otolaryngology
  • Neonatal Care

Background:

  • Auricular helix adhesion is a common congenital ear deformity in newborns.
  • Traditional treatments may involve surgical correction, which carries risks and requires recovery time.
  • Non-surgical methods are sought to improve cosmetic outcomes and patient well-being.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the effectiveness and outcomes of the EarWell System for treating auricular helix adhesion in infants.
  • To determine the impact of treatment initiation timing on the success of ear molding.
  • To assess both immediate and long-term results, as well as complications associated with the EarWell System.

Main Methods:

  • A retrospective study of 46 newborns (66 ears) with helix adhesion treated between 2019 and 2021.
  • Infants were treated using the EarWell System, a non-surgical ear molding device.
  • Outcomes were assessed by two independent plastic surgeons, with data collected on treatment duration and age of initiation.

Main Results:

  • 97.0% of treated ears showed excellent or good immediate results.
  • 95.5% of ears achieved excellent or good long-term outcomes.
  • Earlier initiation of treatment was significantly correlated with better immediate (p=0.001) and long-term (p=0.004) outcomes.

Conclusions:

  • The EarWell System is a highly effective non-surgical treatment for auricular helix adhesion.
  • Timely initiation of treatment is a critical factor for successful correction of ear deformities.
  • This ear molding system offers a viable alternative to surgery for pediatric patients with helix adhesion.
