lncRNA - Long Non-coding RNAs

8.7K
In humans, more than 80% of the genome gets transcribed. However, only around 2% of the genome codes for proteins. The remaining part produces non-coding RNAs which includes ribosomal RNAs, transfer RNAs, telomerase RNAs, and regulatory RNAs, among other types. A large number of regulatory non-coding RNAs have been classified into two groups depending upon their length – small non-coding RNAs, such as microRNA, which are less than 200 nucleotides in length, and long non-coding RNA...

Summary

This study reveals that human papillomavirus (HPV) infection significantly alters long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) expression in common warts. These findings highlight the impact of HPV on the host transcriptome and identify key dysregulated lncRNAs.

Area of Science:

  • Molecular Biology
  • Virology
  • Genomics

Background:

  • Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are crucial regulators of gene expression.
  • The role of lncRNAs in low-risk human papillomavirus (HPV) infections, such as common warts, is not well understood.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the expression profiles of lncRNAs in HPV-induced common warts.
  • To identify differentially expressed lncRNAs associated with common wart development.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized a publicly available high-throughput sequencing dataset of common warts.
  • Analyzed lncRNA expression using the NetworkAnalyst 3.0 workflow.
  • Identified differentially expressed lncRNAs and integrated data with ENCODE, RegNetwork, DisGeNet, and miRNet.

Main Results:

  • Identified 54 significantly dysregulated lncRNAs in common warts.
  • 24 lncRNAs were upregulated, and 30 were downregulated.
  • Key differentially expressed lncRNAs include CERNA2, LINC02159, SH3PXD2A-AS1, and UNC5B-AS1.

Conclusions:

  • HPV-induced warts demonstrably affect the host lncRNA transcriptome.
  • This study represents the first exploration of lncRNA expression changes in response to low-risk HPV infection.
