Area of Science:
- Psychology
- Psychometrics
- Adolescent Health
Background:
- Emotional abuse is a significant concern in adolescent mental health.
- Validated assessment tools are crucial for accurate diagnosis and intervention.
- The Emotional Abuse Questionnaire (EAQ) required adaptation for the Turkish population.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the psychometric properties of the Emotional Abuse Questionnaire (EAQ) for use in Turkish adolescents.
- To establish the validity and reliability of the EAQ in a Turkish cultural context.
- To confirm the suitability of the EAQ for assessing emotional abuse among young individuals.
Main Methods:
- A psychometric study involving 341 adolescents aged 12-19.
- Translation-back translation and expert review for language validity.
- Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) and reliability analyses (Cronbach's alpha, split-half, test-retest).
Main Results:
- The EAQ demonstrated excellent sample adequacy (KMO=0.94).
- CFA confirmed a 6-factor structure with 29 of 30 items suitable for the Turkish population (factor loads 0.40-0.87).
- High reliability was found (Cronbach's alpha=0.94, split-half=0.91, test-retest r=0.92).
Conclusions:
- The Turkish adaptation of the EAQ possesses sufficient internal reliability and validity.
- The EAQ is a suitable and easily applicable tool for evaluating emotional abuse in Turkish adolescents.
- Findings support the use of the EAQ in clinical practice and research within Turkey.
