Muscles of the Shoulder01:23

Muscles of the Shoulder

4.1K
The muscles surrounding the shoulder girdle, including the clavicle and scapula, primarily stabilize the scapula. This stable base allows other muscles to move the humerus effectively. Scapular movements often mirror those of the humerus and extend its range of motion. For instance, raising the arm above the head would not be feasible without simultaneous upward rotation of the scapula.
Anterior Thoracic Muscles
The anterior thoracic muscles include the serratus anterior, subclavius, and...

Summary

A group-based Shoulder-Café intervention did not significantly reduce shoulder complaints compared to individual control in employees. Both interventions improved shoulder health, but no superior effect was found for the Shoulder-Café program.

Area of Science:

  • Occupational health
  • Musculoskeletal disorders
  • Intervention studies

Background:

  • Shoulder complaints are prevalent among employees with high occupational shoulder exposures.
  • Effective interventions are needed to manage shoulder complaints in the workplace.
  • Group-based interventions may offer a novel approach to managing occupational shoulder issues.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the effectiveness of a group-based Shoulder-Café intervention.
  • To compare the Shoulder-Café intervention against an individual-based control intervention.
  • To assess the impact on employees with shoulder complaints and high occupational shoulder exposures.

Main Methods:

  • A cluster-randomised controlled study involving 109 participants from 60 companies.
  • Interventions included pamphlets, exercise guidance, and exposure reduction information.
  • The Shoulder-Café group received additional café-meetings with education, supervised exercises, and counselling.

Main Results:

  • Both groups showed significant improvement in shoulder complaints from baseline to 6 months.
  • No statistically significant differences were observed between the Shoulder-Café and control groups for primary or secondary outcomes.
  • Some supplementary outcomes, such as feeling informed and overall satisfaction, favored the Shoulder-Café intervention at certain time points.

Conclusions:

  • The group-based Shoulder-Café intervention was not more effective than the individual-based control intervention in reducing shoulder complaints.
  • While both approaches yielded improvements, the Shoulder-Café did not demonstrate superior efficacy.
  • Further research may explore specific components of the Shoulder-Café intervention or different delivery methods.
