Mindfulness training may improve intuitive eating in older adults by enhancing body awareness. This study tested a 21-day program for couples, finding it feasible and effective for promoting mindful eating habits.

Area of Science:

  • Behavioral Science
  • Nutritional Science
  • Psychology

Background:

  • Eating outside of hunger signals is common, leading to increased calorie intake and poor food choices.
  • Intuitive eating (IE), guided by internal hunger and satiety cues, may prevent overeating.
  • Accurate perception of bodily signals, or interoceptive sensitivity, is crucial for IE. Training this sensitivity may promote IE and prevent overeating, particularly in older adults and couples.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the feasibility and effectiveness of a 21-day mindfulness-based training program.
  • To enhance interoceptive sensitivity as a method to promote intuitive eating and prevent overeating in middle-aged and older adults.
  • To compare the effects of couples training together versus training alone, alongside a control group.

  • A pilot randomized controlled trial involving 60 couples (aged 50-80) from the NutriAct Family Study.
  • A 21-day intervention with daily guided mindfulness audio exercises (e.g., body scan).
  • Three measurement points (pre-intervention, post-intervention, 4-week follow-up) assessing interoceptive sensitivity, intuitive eating, and maladaptive eating behaviors. Focus group discussions evaluated training feasibility.

Main Results:

  • The study assessed feasibility and effectiveness of a mindfulness training program.
  • Interoceptive sensitivity and intuitive eating indicators were measured pre- and post-intervention.
  • Focus groups gathered feedback on participant acceptance and training feasibility.

Conclusions:

  • Mindfulness-based training shows potential for increasing interoceptive sensitivity.
  • This approach may promote healthy eating behaviors, specifically intuitive eating, in older adults.
  • Further research can build on these findings to develop interventions for healthy aging and eating patterns.
