Summary

Interactive graphics enhance veterinary education by increasing student engagement and interest in complex biomedical data. This study found that these dynamic tools are easy to use and highly motivating for both students and lecturers.

Background:

  • Traditional static or animated graphics in veterinary education often fail to fully represent complex biomedical data.
  • Interactive graphics, allowing dynamic data manipulation, are underutilized in higher education for biomedical disciplines.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the applicability and usefulness of interactive graphics in veterinary biomedical education.
  • To evaluate lecturer and student perceptions of interactive graphics as a teaching tool.

Main Methods:

  • Three biomedical courses were adapted into interactive graphics using the R-based Shiny environment.
  • A pilot study surveyed 327 students and 5 lecturers on the usability and effectiveness of these digital tools.

Main Results:

  • Interactive graphics were found to be easy to handle by both students and lecturers.
  • A significant majority of students (71%) reported increased interest in the subject matter.
  • 76% of students expressed a desire for more courses utilizing interactive graphics.

Conclusions:

  • Interactive graphics are a valuable and motivating tool for veterinary biomedical education.
  • The study provides a workflow for developing interactive graphics to improve teaching and learning outcomes.
