Post COVID-19 Mucormycosis-The Horizon

Acute Invasive Fungal Rhinosinusitis, or mucormycosis, is a serious infection seen in some post-COVID-19 patients. Early diagnosis and treatment significantly improve survival rates for this opportunistic fungal infection.

Background:
- Acute Invasive Fungal Rhinosinusitis (AIFR), commonly known as mucormycosis, is a rare but severe opportunistic infection.
- AIFR has seen increased incidence in patients recovering from COVID-19, particularly after the second wave.
- Risk factors include uncontrolled diabetes mellitus and corticosteroid use, which are often associated with severe COVID-19 cases.
Purpose of the Study:
- To retrospectively evaluate the occurrence and characteristics of Acute Invasive Fungal Rhinosinusitis (Mucormycosis) in patients following COVID-19 infection.
- To identify common clinical presentations, risk factors, and treatment outcomes in this patient cohort.
- To assess the survival rate associated with timely diagnosis and management of AIFR in post-COVID-19 individuals.
