A new utility value set for the MacNew-7D instrument was developed using discrete choice experiments in Australia. This value set is suitable for health economic evaluations in cardiology, providing quality-adjusted life years estimates.
Area of Science:
- Health Economics
- Cardiology
- Quality of Life Measurement
Background:
- A new preference-based measure, MacNew-7D, aids quality of life assessment in cardiology health economic evaluations.
- A general population value set for MacNew-7D was lacking.
- This study aimed to develop a population utility value set for the MacNew-7D instrument.
Purpose of the Study:
- To develop a population utility value set for the MacNew-7D heart disease-specific instrument.
- To enable accurate quality-adjusted life years (QALYs) estimation in health economic evaluations.
- To establish a generalizable value set for the Australian population.
Main Methods:
- Discrete Choice Experiments (DCE) technique employed for preference elicitation.
- Online survey with quota sampling (age, sex, jurisdiction) for Australian population representativeness.
- 200 choice sets per respondent (8 task sets + 2 quality control sets); best-fitting models selected based on consistency, parsimony, and goodness of fit.
Main Results:
- 1903 respondents analyzed.
- MacNew-7D utility values ranged from -0.4456 to 1.000.
- Best-fitting model retained most levels; findings robust to sensitivity analyses.
Conclusions:
- The developed MacNew-7D utility value set is suitable for estimating QALYs in cardiology.
- The value set is derived from an Australian population sample.
- Generalizability to dissimilar populations may be limited.
