Pharmacovigilance

949
Post-marketing surveillance is a critical component of pharmaceutical regulation, often uncovering unanticipated adverse drug reactions (ADRs) once a drug is widely used over an extended period.
This process, termed pharmacovigilance, aims to detect, evaluate, and minimize harmful effects related to medication use. The data collection for pharmacovigilance depends on spontaneous reporting systems, where healthcare professionals or patients voluntarily report suspected ADRs.
In some cases, there...

Area of Science:

  • Public Health
  • Pharmacy Practice
  • Immunization

Background:

  • The COVID-19 pandemic led to a decline in pediatric vaccination rates.
  • The Public Readiness and Emergency Preparedness (PREP) Act expanded the role of pharmacists in vaccine administration.
  • Pharmacists, technicians, and interns can administer ACIP-recommended vaccines for patients aged 3 and older.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the role of community pharmacy personnel in pediatric immunizations.
  • To assess the availability of routine childhood vaccinations in pharmacies.

Main Methods:

  • A survey was conducted among 67 pharmacies in a state allowing pharmacist-administered vaccinations for patients over six months old.
  • 58 pharmacies responded, providing data on pediatric immunization services.

Main Results:

  • Of the 58 respondent pharmacies, 97% offered influenza vaccines, and 88% offered tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis vaccines.
  • Other commonly administered pediatric vaccines included hepatitis (71%), HPV (69%), meningococcal (66%), polio (45%), and Hib (40%).
  • Nearly all surveyed pharmacies (56/58) stocked at least one routine childhood vaccination for patients under 18.

Conclusions:

  • Community pharmacies are strategically positioned to administer routine pediatric vaccinations.
  • Pharmacies can play a crucial role in addressing and reversing the decline in pediatric vaccination rates.
