Summary

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) shows promise as a pleurodesis agent, comparable to talc in a rabbit model. PRP did not induce foreign-body reactions, suggesting its potential for future clinical evaluation in pleurodesis procedures.

Background:

  • Pleurodesis is a procedure to eliminate the pleural space, often used for malignant pleural effusions.
  • Talc is the gold-standard agent for pleurodesis, but can cause adverse effects.
  • Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is being investigated as a potential alternative sclerosing agent.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of autologous platelet-rich plasma (PRP) for pleurodesis in a rabbit model.
  • To compare PRP-induced pleurodesis with talc-induced pleurodesis.
  • To assess the optimal timing for achieving pleurodesis with PRP.

Main Methods:

  • 25 New Zealand white rabbits were divided into three groups: talc pleurodesis, PRP pleurodesis, and a control group.
  • Animals were sacrificed at 3 and 6 days post-intervention for macroscopic and microscopic evaluation.
  • Histopathological analysis of pleura and lungs, along with blood counts (FBC) and C-reactive protein (CRP) measurements, were performed.

Main Results:

  • No significant macroscopic differences were observed between the PRP and talc groups.
  • Microscopic examination revealed no significant differences in inflammatory reactions between PRP and talc.
  • A foreign-body reaction was noted in 50% of talc-treated rabbits, but not in PRP-treated rabbits.

Conclusions:

  • Autologous PRP demonstrates potential as an effective agent for inducing pleurodesis.
  • PRP may offer an advantage over talc by avoiding foreign-body reactions.
  • Further research is warranted to fully explore the efficacy of PRP in pleurodesis.
