Area of Science:

  • Neurodevelopmental Disorders
  • Autism Spectrum Disorder
  • Gender Studies in Health

Background:

  • Autistic women face unique challenges, including later diagnoses and increased mental health risks compared to autistic men.
  • Gender-specific support groups may address these distinct experiences.
  • Virtual mindfulness shows promise for autistic adults, but its efficacy in women-only groups is under-researched.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the feasibility of a virtual mindfulness group specifically for autistic women.
  • To assess demand, implementation, acceptability, practicality, and preliminary efficacy.

Main Methods:

  • A 6-week virtual autism-informed mindfulness program was delivered to 28 autistic women.
  • Participants completed pre- and post-program measures for psychological distress, self-compassion, and mindfulness.
  • A post-program satisfaction survey was administered.

Main Results:

  • The virtual mindfulness program demonstrated feasibility across demand, implementation, practicality, and acceptability.
  • Quantitative analysis revealed no significant pre- to post-program changes in psychological distress, self-compassion, or mindfulness.
  • Qualitative feedback suggested some benefits were experienced by participants.

Conclusions:

  • The piloted virtual mindfulness group for autistic women appears feasible and acceptable.
  • Further research is warranted to explore the potential value and refine interventions for this population.
  • Addressing the unique needs of autistic women through tailored group support may be beneficial.
