Background:

Current traveler health surveillance methods capture limited illness data.
There is a need for improved methods to monitor illness in travelers.
Mobile applications offer a potential solution for real-time health data collection.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate the usability and feasibility of a mobile app for self-reporting traveler-related illnesses.
To assess the potential of the Infection Tracking in Travellers (ITIT) app as a research tool.

Main Methods:

A pilot study involving 37 participants recruited from Swiss travel clinics.
Participants used the ITIT app to report symptoms, geolocation, and weather data.
App usability was assessed via a feedback survey; data patterns were analyzed.

Main Results:

41% of participants reported illness symptoms, predominantly respiratory.
The app was found to be easy to use by all participants.
63% of users would recommend the app, with suggestions for improvement.

Conclusions:

The ITIT app successfully functioned as a research tool.
The app can link infection symptoms with geolocation and climate data.
This pilot study demonstrates the feasibility of using mobile apps for traveler health surveillance.
