A large retroperitoneal cyst caused deep venous thrombosis by compressing the iliac vessels. Surgical removal was successful, revealing a venous malformation.
Area of Science:
- Vascular Surgery
- Gastrointestinal Surgery
- Diagnostic Imaging
Background:
- Retroperitoneal cysts are rare and can present with nonspecific symptoms.
- Deep venous thrombosis (DVT) can be caused by extrinsic compression of iliac vessels.
Observation:
- A 39-year-old male presented with DVT and a history of increasing abdominal girth.
- Imaging revealed a large retroperitoneal cyst compressing the right external iliac vessels.
Findings:
- Complete surgical excision of the 25 cm cyst was performed.
- Histopathology and immunohistochemistry confirmed a vascular origin, consistent with a venous malformation.
Implications:
- This case highlights the importance of investigating abdominal distension for potential compressive masses.
- Early diagnosis and surgical intervention are crucial for managing large retroperitoneal cysts causing vascular complications.
