Background:

  • Invasive fungal sinusitis, particularly aspergillosis, is an emerging concern.
  • The association between coronavirus disease (COVID-19) and secondary fungal infections requires investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between invasive fungal sinusitis (aspergillosis) and COVID-19.

Main Methods:

  • An observational study was conducted over six months at a tertiary care center.
  • Included patients with paranasal sinus aspergillosis and a history of or active COVID-19 infection.

Main Results:

  • All 92 patients studied had aspergillosis associated with COVID-19.
  • The maxillary sinus was most commonly affected (100%).
  • Orbital and intracranial extensions occurred in 34 and 5 cases, respectively. Diabetes mellitus (75/92) and prior steroid use for COVID-19 were prevalent.

Conclusions:

  • A significant association exists between COVID-19 and invasive fungal sinusitis (aspergillosis).
  • Uncontrolled diabetes and excessive steroid use are critical factors exacerbating this condition.
  • These factors necessitate careful management in patients with COVID-19 and suspected fungal sinusitis.
