Facial Feedback Hypothesis01:24

Facial Feedback Hypothesis

229
Charles Darwin proposed that facial expressions are an evolutionary adaptation for communication. He argued that these expressions are not influenced by culture but are universal across species. For example, a snarling expression with exposed teeth signals a threat in many animals, including humans. Darwin also suggested that displaying an emotion can intensify the feeling. Smiling, for example, could enhance one's sense of happiness. This idea laid the foundation for understanding the role...

Feedback Inhibition00:46

Feedback Inhibition

Biochemical reactions are occurring constantly in cells, converting starting substances to different products, usually with the help of enzymes that speed the reactions. Without enzymes, it would take far too long for most reactions to occur to be useful to the cell!

Frustration and Conflict: Avoidance-Avoidance, Double-Approach Avoidance

133
Avoidance-avoidance conflict refers to a psychological situation where a person must choose between two or more unpleasant alternatives. These conflicts are particularly stressful because neither option is desirable. This dilemma is often expressed in sayings like "caught between a rock and a hard place" or "between the devil and the deep blue sea." For instance, individuals who fear dental procedures may find themselves torn between enduring a painful toothache or facing the...

Stereotypes, Prejudice, and Discrimination

90.4K
Humans are very diverse and although we share many similarities, we also have many differences. The social groups we belong to help form our identities (Tajfel, 1974). These differences may be difficult for some people to reconcile, which may lead to prejudice toward people who are different. Prejudice is a negative attitude and feeling toward an individual based solely on one’s membership in a particular social group (Allport, 1954; Brown, 2010). Prejudice is common against people who...

Aggression01:47

Aggression

28.0K
Humans engage in aggression when they seek to cause harm or pain to another person. Aggression takes two forms depending on one’s motives: hostile or instrumental. Hostile aggression is motivated by feelings of anger with intent to cause pain; a fight in a bar with a stranger is an example of hostile aggression. In contrast, instrumental aggression is motivated by achieving a goal and does not necessarily involve intent to cause pain (Berkowitz, 1993); a contract killer who murders for...

Summary

Emotional stimuli, particularly angry faces, disrupt cognitive control. This study shows that irrelevant emotional information impairs response inhibition and adjustment, impacting task performance.

Area of Science:

  • Cognitive psychology
  • Neuroscience

Background:

  • Cognitive control allows adaptation to task demands.
  • Response inhibition and adjustment are key components of cognitive control.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate how implicit emotional information processing affects cognitive control.
  • To examine the influence of emotional stimuli on response inhibition and adjustment.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized the double-step saccade task with single and sequential targets.
  • Manipulated emotional and non-emotional information of targets across three experiments.

Main Results:

  • Irrelevant emotional information on the first target impaired response inhibition.
  • Angry emotional faces as the second target interfered with both inhibition and adjustment when the first target was non-emotional.

Conclusions:

  • Processing angry facial expressions consumes attentional resources, hindering cognitive control functions.
  • Emotional stimuli significantly impact the ability to inhibit and adjust responses during tasks.
