Variability in Hemispheric Functional Segregation Phenotypes: A Review and General Mechanistic Model
1Department of Experimental Psychology, Ghent University, Ghent, Belgium. robin.gerrits@ugent.be.
Brain function lateralization shows significant individual differences. This study proposes a new model to explain the diverse patterns of hemispheric specialization observed in humans, moving beyond typical left-right brain biases.
Area of Science:
- Neuroscience
- Cognitive Science
- Human Brain Function
Background:
- Human brain functions exhibit asymmetric organization with population-level biases.
- Tasks like speech (left hemisphere) and spatial processing (right hemisphere) show typical hemispheric dominance.
- However, significant individual variations in hemispheric functional segregation are increasingly recognized.
Purpose of the Study:
- To review and model the variability in human brain lateralization.
- To propose a general mechanistic model explaining observed segregation phenotypes.
- To generate new, testable hypotheses regarding brain function distribution.
Main Methods:
- Comprehensive literature review of functional lateralization studies.
- Integration of established and novel theories on lateralization mechanisms.
- Development of a mechanistic model for brain segregation phenotypes.
Main Results:
- Departures from standard hemispheric division of labor are common and diverse.
- Each observed pattern of functional segregation has a distinct prevalence rate.
- The proposed model accounts for the distribution of these segregation phenotypes.
Conclusions:
- Individual differences in brain lateralization are a key area for neuroscience research.
- The proposed mechanistic model offers a framework for understanding brain function variability.
- Further research can test the model's predictions regarding hemispheric specialization.
