Summary

Bioelectrical impedance analysis-derived phase angle (PhA) is a nutritional indicator in Systemic sclerosis (SSc). Lower PhA values correlate with malnutrition risk and increased mortality in SSc patients.

Background:

  • Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is a rare autoimmune disease causing microvascular damage and organ fibrosis.
  • Malnutrition is a common complication in SSc, negatively impacting quality of life and prognosis.
  • Nutritional status assessment is crucial for managing SSc patients.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate bioelectrical impedance analysis-derived phase angle (PhA) as a nutritional status parameter in SSc.
  • To determine if PhA can serve as a marker of mortality in Systemic sclerosis patients.

Main Methods:

  • An exploratory pilot study included 104 adult SSc patients.
  • Nutritional status was assessed using the Malnutrition Universal Screening Tool (MUST) and Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition (GLIM) criteria.
  • Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) was performed to obtain PhA values.

Main Results:

  • Lower PhA values were significantly associated with higher malnutrition risk (MUST) and malnutrition (GLIM) in SSc patients.
  • SSc patients with PhA < 3.75° had significantly shorter overall survival.
  • Multivariate analysis identified PhA as an independent predictor of mortality in SSc.

Conclusions:

  • Lower PhA is linked to increased malnutrition risk and mortality in Systemic sclerosis.
  • PhA may serve as a valuable tool for nutritional assessment and prognosis in SSc.
  • Further research is warranted to validate these findings.
