Background:

  • Optic neuritis is an inflammatory condition affecting the optic nerve.
  • While visual acuity often recovers, subclinical visual deficits may persist.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To systematically evaluate visual function in patients with recovered optic neuritis.
  • To identify common visual deficits and their correlation with subjective complaints.

Main Methods:

  • Systematic characterization of visual function in 35 eyes from 27 patients with recovered optic neuritis (minimum 6-month recovery).
  • Assessment included Snellen acuity, color vision, contrast sensitivity, perimetry, stereoacuity, light brightness sense, pupillary reaction, and optic disc appearance.

  • High prevalence of visual deficits: contrast sensitivity (72%), stereoacuity (80%), light brightness (89%), pupillary reaction (89%), and optic disc appearance (77%).
  • Color vision (57%) and perimetry (26%) also showed abnormalities.
  • Eighty-five percent reported subjective visual disturbances, correlating with contrast sensitivity deficits.

Conclusions:

  • Significant visual function deficits are common even after apparent recovery from optic neuritis.
  • Contrast sensitivity and color vision impairments are prevalent and impact quality of life.
