The Scientific Method02:40

The Scientific Method

60.2K
Research is what makes the difference between facts and opinions. Facts are observable realities, and opinions are personal judgments, conclusions, or attitudes that may or may not be accurate. In the scientific community, facts can be established only using evidence collected through empirical research.

Cognitive Therapy01:25

Cognitive Therapy

203
Cognitive therapy, pioneered by Aaron T. Beck in the 1960s, is a structured approach to addressing psychological distress by focusing on the influence of thoughts on emotions and behaviors. All cognitive therapies involve the basic assumption that human beings have control over their feelings, and that how individuals feel about something depends on how they think about it. Unlike psychoanalytic methods that delve into unconscious processes or humanistic approaches emphasizing...

Altered States of Awareness01:06

Altered States of Awareness

328
Altered states of consciousness represent significant deviations from one's normal mental state. These deviations can range from subtle changes in awareness to profound transformations in perception, thought processes, and sensory experiences. Altered states of consciousness can be triggered by various factors, including drug use, meditation, hypnosis, illness, or even intense fatigue.
The ingestion of substances like stimulants or hallucinogens leads to chemical alterations in the brain...

Stress and Mental Health01:30

Stress and Mental Health

195
Chronic stress profoundly affects mental health, significantly influencing mood, behavior, and overall quality of life. Research closely links chronic stress with mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, and substance use disorders. Ongoing exposure to stress can lead to physiological and psychological changes, initiating a cycle of emotional distress and maladaptive coping mechanisms.
Individuals with depression often experience challenges in both their personal and professional...

Ethnic Identity within a Larger Culture01:27

Ethnic Identity within a Larger Culture

69
Adolescents from ethnic minority backgrounds face a multifaceted journey in forming their identities, shaped by the intersections of cultural expectations and personal exploration. For these adolescents, identity formation involves not only typical developmental challenges but also navigating the perceptions and attitudes of the majority culture. As they grow, adolescents in ethnic minority groups often become increasingly aware of stereotypes, social biases, and discrimination, all of which...

Modeling in Therapy01:26

Modeling in Therapy

135
Modeling, a key technique in therapy, uses observational learning to help clients acquire and practice new skills by watching therapists demonstrate desired behaviors. This approach, rooted in Albert Bandura's concept of vicarious learning, plays a significant role in therapeutic interventions for various psychological conditions, including social anxiety, ADHD, and depression.
Participant Modeling
Participant modeling involves therapists demonstrating calm and effective behaviors in...

Area of Science:

  • Mental Health
  • Mindfulness Research
  • Transgender Health

Background:

  • Transgender and gender diverse youth (TGDY) often face unique mental health challenges.
  • Mindfulness meditation is a potential therapeutic modality, but its applicability for TGDY requires investigation.
  • Culturally informed interventions are crucial for effective support of TGDY.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To explore the openness of TGDY to mindfulness meditation programs.
  • To inform the development of culturally sensitive mindfulness interventions for TGDY.
  • To assess the impact of guided mindfulness meditation on TGDY anxiety levels.

Main Methods:

  • Two focus groups were conducted with ten TGDY (ages 14-24).
  • Participants experienced a 10-min guided mindfulness meditation.
  • State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) and thematic analysis were used.

Main Results:

  • Four themes emerged: Active in Self-care, Silent Meditation Is "Not for Me," Guided Mindfulness Calms and Connects, and Program Ideas for Future.
  • A statistically significant reduction in anxiety was observed post-meditation (STAI).
  • TGDY expressed openness to mindfulness as a self-care tool.

Conclusions:

  • Mindfulness meditation shows potential as a healing modality for TGDY.
  • Future programs should incorporate sensory stimulation, a pressure-free environment, and ideally, TGDY instructors.
  • Culturally informed mindfulness interventions can benefit TGDY mental health.
