Summary

Subclinical functional voice disorders may indicate future vocal hyperfunction. Measuring autonomic nervous system (ANS) indicators and laryngeal muscle tone can identify at-risk individuals for early intervention.

Background:

  • The autonomic nervous system (ANS) plays a crucial role in the pathomechanism of functional voice disorders.
  • Understanding the interplay between ANS and vocal tract muscles is vital for diagnosing and treating voice conditions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between ANS electrophysiological indicators and external laryngeal muscle tone.
  • To determine if combined measurements can predict the risk of primary functional voice disorder.

Main Methods:

  • Study included 81 participants, including 27 professional opera singers, all without voice complaints.
  • Methods involved ENT and phoniatric examinations, superficial electromyography (SEMG), and recording of physiological indicators (heart rate, skin resistance).
