A single nucleotide polymorphism or SNP is a single nucleotide variation at a specific genomic position in a large population. It is the most prevalent type of sequence variation found in the human genome. Point mutations that occur in more than 1% of the population qualify as SNPs. Summary

Four microRNA (miRNA) polymorphisms were analyzed for their association with ischemic stroke (IS) risk. While some showed no link, others, like miR-149 and miR-499, were associated with increased IS risk.

  • Investigating miRNA polymorphisms may reveal predictive markers for IS.

Conclusions:

  • All four single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) showed associations with the risk of IS or SAO.
  • The findings suggest that certain miRNA polymorphisms may contribute to the risk of cerebrovascular diseases like IS and SAO.
  • Despite inconsistencies in overall and subgroup analyses, these miRNA SNPs warrant further investigation in relation to atherosclerosis and stroke.
