Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Surgical Oncology
  • Thoracic Surgery

Background:

  • Benign esophageal diseases often require surgical intervention.
  • Esophageal resection followed by reconstruction is a common treatment pathway.
  • Colon interposition is a reconstructive technique used after esophageal resection.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the operative morbidity and long-term outcomes of colon interposition for benign esophageal diseases.
  • To assess patient and physician-reported results following colon interposition.
  • To determine the complication and reoperation rates associated with this procedure.

Main Methods:

  • A retrospective review of 53 consecutive patients undergoing esophageal resection and colon interposition for benign conditions.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Analysis of operative mortality, major complications, and long-term follow-up data (average 5 years).
  • Patient and physician subjective and objective ratings of outcomes were collected and analyzed.
  • Main Results:

    • Two operative deaths (3.8%) and a 26.4% rate of major complications, including graft infarcts, perforations, and anastomotic leaks.
    • A 37% late reoperation rate for strictures, persistent symptoms, or anastomotic leaks.
    • High patient acceptance with an average subjective rating of 1.89 (75% good or excellent) and physician ratings averaging 2.05 (72% excellent or good).

    Conclusions:

    • Colon interposition for benign esophageal disease is associated with low mortality.
    • Despite a notable rate of complications and reoperations, the procedure yields high patient satisfaction.
    • Colon interposition remains a preferred method for esophageal reconstruction in benign conditions.
