Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the frequency of objective cognitive deficits and subjective cognitive complaints after COVID-19.
  • To identify demographic and clinical factors associated with cognitive dysfunction and complaints.

Main Methods:

  • 110 adults with COVID-19 underwent neuropsychological testing 12 months post-infection.
  • Cognitive dysfunction defined as ≥2 abnormal tests; cognitive complaints by questionnaire (CFQ ≥ 43).
  • Evaluated predictors including education, preinfection history, acute COVID-19 symptoms, anxiety, depression, and fatigue.

Main Results:

  • 18.2% had cognitive dysfunction, 33.3% had cognitive complaints.
  • Lower education and acute COVID-19 symptoms (headache, sleep disturbance) predicted both.
  • Cognitive complaints were also linked to anxiety, depression, and fatigue.

Conclusions:

  • A subset of individuals experiences long-term cognitive difficulties after COVID-19.
  • Education may offer a protective effect on cognitive reserve.
  • Headache and sleep disturbance during acute infection are risk factors for persistent cognitive issues.
