  • To investigate the correlation between colonic intraluminal content volume and diameter measured via computed tomography (CT) and chronic constipation symptoms and stool consistency.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 149 patients who completed the Constipation Scoring System (CSS) and Bristol Stool Form Scale (BSFS) questionnaires.
  • Abdominal CT scans were used to measure intestinal tract diameter and evaluate stool and gas volumes at five levels.

Main Results:

  • Significant correlations were found between gas volume and CSS5 (Time) in the right hemi-colon.
  • Stool volume in the left hemi-colon correlated with CSS2 (Difficulty), CSS3 (Completeness), CSS5 (Time), and total CSS scores.
  • BSFS scores showed negative correlations with gas volume and diameter in the right hemi-colon and gas volume in the rectum.

Conclusions:

  • CT-derived measurements of stool and gas volume, along with colonic diameter, are associated with specific constipation symptoms and stool consistency.
  • These imaging findings offer potential utility in the clinical evaluation and management of chronic constipation.
