Summary

Occupational asthma linked to egg protein allergy was identified in workers handling powdered eggs. Exposure to egg dust, exceeding guidelines, correlated with allergic reactions and asthma symptoms.

Background:

  • Workers in raw egg processing plants face exposure to airborne egg proteins.
  • Egg dust levels in packaging rooms were found to be near the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists' (ACGIH) exposure guideline for nuisance dust.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the occurrence of occupational asthma in workers exposed to egg proteins.
  • To assess the role of IgE-mediated allergy to egg proteins in the development of asthma in these workers.

  • Industrial hygiene assessment of egg dust levels.
  • Medical histories, physical examinations, spirometry, and serial peak expiratory flow rate (PEFR) measurements.
  • Skin-prick tests and radioallergosorbent (RAST) assays for specific IgE to egg proteins.
