Insights
Cor triatriatum sinistrum (CTS) is a rare congenital heart defect. This case report details sudden cardiac death in an adult due to untreated CTS, a previously unreported cause of mortality.
Area of Science:
- Cardiology
- Congenital Heart Disease
- Pathology
Background:
- Cor triatriatum sinistrum (CTS) is a rare congenital cardiac malformation characterized by a fenestrated membrane dividing the left atrium.
- This anomaly can impede blood flow, leading to symptoms of congestive heart failure, and may rarely manifest in adulthood.
Observation:
- This case report presents a rare instance of sudden cardiac death (SCD) in an adult patient.
- The SCD was attributed to the long-term sequelae of undiagnosed and untreated Cor triatriatum sinistrum.
Findings:
- This is the first reported case of sudden cardiac death directly linked to Cor triatriatum sinistrum.
- The findings highlight the potential for severe, fatal outcomes from this congenital heart defect, even in adulthood.
Implications:
- This case underscores the importance of considering rare congenital heart anomalies in the differential diagnosis of sudden cardiac death, particularly in younger adults.
- It emphasizes the need for timely diagnosis and management of Cor triatriatum sinistrum to prevent potentially fatal complications.
- Further research into the long-term prognosis and optimal management strategies for adult patients with Cor triatriatum sinistrum is warranted.
Abstract:
Cor triatriatum sinistrum (CTS) is a rare congenital cardiac malformation in which the left atrium is divided by a fenestrated membrane, which can restrict blood flow and cause symptoms of congestive heart failure. Rarely, the condition can present in adulthood. This case report illustrates a case of sudden cardiac death (SCD) due to the sequelae of untreated CTS. To date, there are no reported cases of SCD attributable to CTS.
Learning Objectives:
Cor triatriatum sinistrum is among the rarest of congenital heart diseases. In this case report, we describe the prevalence, etiology, diagnosis, and management of this disease.
