Economic constraints negatively impact work volition, especially for rural students with lower ethnic identity and Zhongyong thinking. Hukou and Zhongyong thinking moderate these effects.
Area of Science:
- Psychology
- Sociology
- Economics
Background:
- The psychology of working theory provides a framework for understanding vocational behavior.
- Economic constraints and socio-cultural factors like ethnic identity (minzu), Hukou status, and Zhongyong thinking can influence an individual's work volition.
- Understanding these influences is crucial for supporting student career development in diverse contexts.
Purpose of the Study:
- To examine the relationships between economic constraints, ethnic identity, Hukou, Zhongyong thinking, and work volition among Chinese undergraduates.
- To investigate the moderating roles of Hukou and Zhongyong thinking on the association between economic constraints and work volition.
Main Methods:
- Survey research design.
- Utilized a sample of 2,995 undergraduate students in China.
- Statistical analysis to test direct and moderating effects.
Main Results:
- Work volition showed a negative association with economic constraints.
- Work volition was positively related to Zhongyong thinking.
- Hukou and Zhongyong thinking significantly moderated the relationship between economic constraints and work volition.
- Undergraduates from rural areas and those with lower levels of Zhongyong thinking exhibited weaker negative associations between economic constraints and work volition.
Conclusions:
- Economic constraints pose a challenge to work volition, particularly for vulnerable student populations.
- Hukou and Zhongyong thinking are important contextual factors influencing the economic constraints-work volition relationship.
- Interventions should consider socio-cultural factors to enhance work volition among students facing economic hardship.
